The Monks!

There's a new documentary out about The Monks, a band from the 60's made up of U.S. Army GIs stationed in Germany. I first learned of them from a WFMU video. The documentary doesn't have international distribution yet but rumor has it that the band will reunite for a late-2006 tour.

I see there was a showing in L.A. last week; have you heard anything about it playing in the N.Y. area?

No, I haven't. The article (linked to the blog's title) didn't mention any showings and I haven't tried Googling for them yet.

A little known fact: The Monks were the first military experiment at musical youth mind control, which ultimately culminated in the eventual creation of their more famous progeny, the Monkees.

Other failed experimental bands of the sixties included the little known Monksters, which escaped their military confines and began freelancing as the Sacred Cows. Some of you may remember their appearance with the Groovy Guru on CIA collaborator Mel Brooks' propaganda television series, Get Smart!
